spEak You're bRanes
If you've ever looked at the comments section on the website of a newspaper and wondered why the people on there have ever been let out of the house (maybe they haven't that's what's wrong), you'll enjoy the blog spEak You're bRanes. I just discovered it via an article in the Guardian's Guide today. It basically highlights some of the most ignorant and bigoted posts on the BBC's Have Your Say section and takes the piss out of them.
For a while I've been in despair of the Scotsman's comments section (pick an article, they nearly all allow comments). It's really no worse than any other similar facility, where the Have Your Say ranters seem to be English nationalists the Scotsman ones tend to be Scottish nationalists. As I need to keep up with certain topics in the news in Scotland, it's a little hard to avoid the Scotsman (the Herald isn't much better) and I know I could not scroll to the comments, but you know, car crashes and all that.
I avoid the political news stories because they generally descend into 4,000 comments having the same argument they have every day. But the comments that I do see match the Have Your Say ones in their use of the English language (if that is a concept still recognised by Scotsman commenters). There's one guy who basically uses any news stories around women's health as a blog to tell people about he and his wife's infertility struggles, and occasionally, their sex life. Now I recognise that infertility is no laughing matter and a real struggle for many, but I really don't need to read about the operations a stranger is having within a serious article on a national newspaper site. Even better is the way he writes (from an article on the morning-after pill):
"It has not yet been decided if there will be an age limit on who can receive the pill."
Have you EVER Heard Soo Much Rubbish of differing Standards,?
Only yesterday we heard in the EEN, they were going to give this "Pill" out to 13year old girls, in our Schools!!
Soo Let me 'Understand this for a Mo!
Its 'OK' to 'Experiment' with a 13year old Girl, But NOT an older Woman,?
Whys That,?
Are you saying a,..'13year old' has 'NO VOICE' if and when things go wrong!?
Its OK to give a 13year old the likes of, 'Cancer' 10years down the line, but not an Adult Woman!
Because in 'LAW' a 13year old is NOT an Adult!
It's always particularly entertaining when there's an article on the pill as he will claim women are being experimented on and then post a link to a really dodgy website to 'prove it'. Any medical professional who links to genuine studies about it and tries to reason with him always fails.
Anyway, spEak You're bRanes, for when you've been reading too many news articles with commenting facilities and are in despair for humanity.
