It's here!

The Mac

We are pleased to announce the safe arrival of the New iMac.  Delivered to a neighbour on Friday (although the UPS card didn't state this) it finally arrived in the flat last night.  Jon has been working hard to get it running right and now I'm having a play.  It's absolutely stunning and got some really nifty features that will probably take me a few weeks to remember.  Must make sure I use the mouse properly, at work I use a Mousebean but we can't taint an Apple mouse with one of those (because, you know, design is so much more important than the health of our wrists).

I'm currently reading Fine that by Julia Welstead, detailing life on one of the smaller Orcadian islands, Sanday.  I am now using the BBC's listen again feature to listen to Radio Orkney, just to hear the accents really.  They are currently discussing the fire hazards of Christmas trees.

Awww...

Jon and I are very excited to tell you that a bundle of joy will be coming into our lives in the next week.  It's not been an easy journey, involving mistakes on credit reports etc, but we can't wait now, and will love it with all our hearts.

The man I love...

...is currently training his new Nintendog.  Who he has named Brenda.  Which he has had to call her repeatedly in order to teach her her name (it records him saying this).

Brenda?

(Ok, I've just become more interested because the bubble blowing toy on it works by you actually blowing on the screen.  I can't stand dogs but I think I could maybe like Brenda.  Even if she is called Brenda.)

Wistful thinking

I've always like Amazon wishlists and have used mine more as a memory trigger so I don't forget books I want to have a look at. I took a couple off after looking at them in Waterstones this morning.

I've always thought it would be good to have a wish list you could put stuff on from anywhere. With Web 2.0 being de rigeur these days there are now a couple that I've been trying. I like Wists best and have been adding stuff on. It's supposed to be mainly for putting nice handcrafted things on that I might forget about, but, er, at the moment it's got snazzy kitchenware alongside it too in case any scary internet stalker type person wants to indulge me. Good for birthdays, weddings, new sprogs, new home, all sorts... Or for desperate materialists who love window shopping.

Knitting fingers twitching

Amber is mean, because when you read this post in Bloglines you don't get the 'continue reading' line. Although I did twig before I went to the site to leave a message of congratulations. Reading stuff after 12noon means you miss out on the whole April Fool effect. And I am blonde.

My cousin Helen isn't mean though, so I do have another baby to be knitting for. Check back tomorrow for the latest baby knitting project for my friend Liz - 'non-descript animal bootees'.

My new blog

Ah yes, I've started another blog. Again. I aim to keep up with this one, partly because it has more of a niche and partly because it's the foundations of my potential future (not as a self-help book writer).

For several years now I've been thinking about doing this information professional thing independently and setting up on my own. I'm not ready yet, but with the new blog I may hopefully start to get myself known. In a few years Mr Nagl and I hope to leave the city behind and relocate somewhere a bit more scenic, but we'll of course need to make a living, another very good reason for making a go of my own business. I come from a family of musicians and artists and know how hard it will be, but I don't want to be saying 'what if' and 'well, we can't move because I can't find a job'. I've lived on an island and know that's not easy either.

Anyway, go and take a look at Marsco Information and Research, it may not interest you, in which case I shan't be offended if you don't return.

Chatiryworld and the World

I nicked the idea of having a ClustrMap from my other half, and it's really interesting. It basically tells you where in the world your visitors are coming from. Mine is way down on my sidebar but you can see it more clearly here. I appear to have a reader in Lapland and Finland seems to be quite popular too. Whilst I wouldn't want anyone to comment if they didn't want to, I'd be fascinated to hear from you if you can 'spot your spot' on the map.

Sellout

I've put some Amazon ads on my site in an attempt to pay for this site.  Plus I like that there's a bookshop of sorts on the site.  I've got a small ad for knitting and craft books up at the top, and further links to books on Scotland (especially ones with good photography) and poetry books much further down the sidebar.  I may also put little links within posts, but only if relevant.  I don't expect to make much but I thought I'd give it a go.

New look

You like? I upgraded Word Press, downloaded a new theme, put a different photo on (this is one I took in Orkney last year, from MM and DD's house) then created pages for my Flickr photos. All reasonably idiot-proof.

links and links and links

Seriously Scottish LIVE streamed music player. Mix of classical, folk and popular items from the hit parade. Includes one of my favourite pieces (makes me cry), Farewell to Stromness by Peter Maxwell Davies. Unfortunately you can't listen to the tracks individually but they all look pretty great to me.

DIY paper bookmarks. Via moleskinerie blog.

Two fantastic 'duo' blogs I've just discovered: Muse To Muse and port2port.

My del.icio.us page, will work on integrating it into the blog soon, but this is how I manage my links now.
